The Calla Club has fantastic food, at a reasonable price, the service is excellent, the restaurant has a family style ambiance. The owner (Lynn) is always on the premises, and can often be found in the dining room, stopping at the tables and chatting with customers. It's a personal touch that you rarely find. Overall, my experience was wonderful, and I would recommend the Calla Club to anyone.

Fish fries in Cleveland always have been popular, especially during Lent. The problem is that once Easter arrives, many of those neighborhood fish fries close for the season.

Well, good news because you can get a great fish fry every day at The Calla Restaurant, 5143 Canal Road, at Warner Road, right on the border of Garfield Heights and Valley View.

The Calla serves fresh walleye that is hand-breaded with specially seasoned crumbs, then deep fried until nicely browned.

With the fish fry comes seasoned french fries and a small side of coleslaw. Two pieces of fish are served, for $8.95 at lunch and $9.95 at dinner. Hungry? Get all you can eat for just $10.95.

Homemade soups are sold by the cup or bowl. A recent day's split pea special was good, but the chili was pretty traditional and almost beanless. A cup of either is $2.75.

In a selection of 10 salads, the sizable Buffalo chicken ($8.95) is filled with assorted mixed greens, arugula, radicchio, chopped tomatoes and shaved onions. It's topped with grilled chicken tenders, coated with a medium Buffalo sauce, then capped with crumbled blue cheese. Add your choice of dressing.

"We can and will do anything a customer wants because everything is made from scratch," said chef Lynn Gentile, who has owned the Calla since 1994. Most recipes are Gentile's, who teams with chef Rick Betts in the kitchen.

The new choice of seafood lasagna ($9.95 lunch, $14.95 dinner) already is a favorite of customers, even though it hasn't worked its way yet onto the menu. The lasagna is made with a lobster cream sauce.

The best-selling veal parmesan ($15.95) is served with a side of pasta, but be sure you check the daily specials for some down-home selections you won't find on many menus.

The Calla club ($8.95) is a fabulous open-face sandwich on a single slice of pumpernickel, topped with shaved turkey, swiss cheese, bacon, tomato and hard-cooked egg. It's capped with a lettuce "lid," then drizzled with French dressing and dotted with black olives.

Hours at the Calla Restaurant are 11 a.m. to 2:00 a.m. weekdays and 4 p.m. to 2:00 a.m. Saturday. Call (216) 441-2144 for details.

Love your food!

The cuisine is wonderful here. Salad dressings and sauces all made from scratch, and they are superb! Only one little thing...if you're there...please do something to improve your non-alcoholic beverage selections, okay? thanks. Also, you should have an amateur comedian Night.  It would be "big".   Cleveland 8/23/2008
